Clinical Observation of the Serum Cholinesterase Activity in Burned Patient

Abstract
From March 1971 to August 1971 with 5 months duration 405 serial determination of pseudocholi
nesterase were carried out and observed on serim from 50 burned patients who were admitted to General
Surgery department of Korea University hospital. Pseudo-cholinesterase activity was determined serially
by microcolorimetric method of Garry and Routh which required the small amount of serum.
1) Thermal agent was scalds in 27, flame in 20, others in 3.
2) Mean burned surface area of total 50 patients is 33.3%.
3) In survivors the average pseudocholinesterase level was 5.8§ SH/3 min/§¢ and 3.4§ SH/3
min/§¢ in the dead.
4) The major signs and symptoms of enzyme depletion were anxiety, dyspnea, mental confusion,
cyanosis and progressive respiratory failure.
5) The age incidence ranged from 3 months to 56 years old. The incidence between 1¡9 years of age
was most frequent, and its number was 20 patients.
